A Bird Came Down Emily Dickinson
A Dew Studs
“Conjectured were they Pearls”
A pair of dew-drop studs, caught the moment before they fall.
The Story
In Dickinson's summer shower the raindrops are mistaken for treasure — "Myself Conjectured were they Pearls — / What Necklaces could be —". We took her at her word. Each stud is a single drop, polished to a mirror so it holds the light the way a bead of water does the instant before it falls.
Small, bright and quiet — the everyday pieces of the collection, the ones you forget you are wearing until someone leans close and finds a pearl the sky let fall.
The Poem
A Drop fell on the Apple Tree —
Another — on the Roof —
A Half a Dozen kissed the Eaves —
And made the Gables laugh —
A few went out to help the Brook
That went to help the Sea —
Myself Conjectured were they Pearls —
What Necklaces could be —
The Dust replaced, in Hoisted Roads —
The Birds jocoser sung —
The Sunshine threw his Hat away —
The Bushes — spangles flung —
The Breezes brought dejected Lutes —
And bathed them in the Glee —
The Orient showed a single Flag,
And signed the fête away —
A Drop fell on the Apple Tree — Emily Dickinson 1830–1886
